C.R.O.W

C.R.O.W (City Right Of Way) is a project suggested by THE Rome based urban research group Stalker on their visit to Belfast in 2010. The project takes the form of a series of monthly walks exploring and gaining access to overlooked or unorthodox locations in Belfast, organised by artists M. Hogg and A. O’ Beirn. The development of this project is hoped to bring some insights into ignored or unseen parts of Belfast. The project has been supported by British Council, Flaxart Studios and PLACE.

The project has involved working with individuals and organisations across the city including Catalyst Arts, GROW community Gardens, Space Craft and PLACE. Each month a participant suggests a walk for the forthcoming month.

There is a CROW blog documenting all walks on this project with google maps, photographs and a written account of each route.

Ormeau Road Alleyway Walk1 : 2/10/2010

Walk suggested by Niamh O’ Donnell

The aim of the walk was to see how far one can get through this area of the city by using the alley-ways, and testing their semi private status. The walk took in both narrow and spacious alleys either side of the Ormeau Rd.

Divining the Blackstaff Walk 2: 19/11/10

Walk suggested by Paula Campbell

The group of walkers met at the Broadway where, Paula Campbell demonstrated how to make divining rods from a wire coat hanger and two biro sheaths. Diviners in hand we set off across the city until the rods took us to the mouth of the Blackstaff.

Some Public Toilets Walk 3:16/12/10

Walk suggested by Suzanna Chan

The third CROW walk set out to investigate some of Belfast’s public conveniences and so doing had an opportunity to think about the term public. We took in 11 toilets in all, some permanent, some temporary, some automatic and even one nocturnal urinal.

Fountains and Fonts 27/1/11

Walk suggested by Paula Campbell

This first walk of the new year made a healthy start by taking in some of the cities fountains and water fonts around the city, checking out where one could happen across a free supply of drinking water.

C.R.O.W.S Fly East for the Spring 11/3/11

Walk suggested by Niamh O’ Donnell and Mac MacWilliam

Previous CROW walks have for the most part been based on an itinerary or a themed route – they have been constructed on the basis of a kindof content. A quasi-random walk was held in an effectively arbitrary location as a contrast.

A simple game-like system was used in order to decide the path.

Three basic mechanisms were used to determine our route – a fortune

telling fish, a die and a spinning piece of wire.

Family Easter ArchiHunt in collaboration with PLACE 23/4/1

Event suggested by Amberlea Neeley and Anna at PLACE

CROW in association with PLACE devised a family fun morning Easter Archihunt in the Fountain St area of the city.

Children unearthed secrets and treats are hidden on the streets by exploring the architecture and art of Belfast City Centre to uncover hidden goodies. They made hopscotch on Fountain Arcade, made button badges at Space Craft, drew zines at Catalyst, and were duly rewarded with Easter Bunnies!

CROW and GROW go Seed bombing 8/ 6 / 11

Event suggested by Justin Nicoll

Crow and GROW community Gardens joined forces on a seedbombing and guerilla planting mission in Belfast City Centre. The fruits of our labour can be seen in the planters on the Façade of the old Royal Ave Bank of Ireland.
